Frequently asked questions
RMS Republic was a White Star Line ocean liner that sank on January 24, 1909, following a collision in dense fog off the coast of Nantucket. Today, the wreck rests approximately 270 feet beneath the Atlantic and is at the center of a historic recovery mission focused on its reported lost cargoes.
The mission is to return to the RMS Republic wreck site, investigate and excavate the areas believed to contain its historic cargo, recover and secure what is found, and preserve and document the discovery for future generations.
The wreck of RMS Republic lies approximately 270 feet beneath the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.
Historical research presented in the project's investor materials identifies two significant shipments believed to have been aboard the vessel: approximately 45 tons of U.S. $20 gold eagle coins associated with a Russian State Bank shipment and approximately 8 tons of U.S. Navy funds. Additional cargoes may also exist.
The two identified shipments are estimated at approximately 1.57 million troy ounces of gold, with a combined estimated weight of approximately 53 tons. The investor materials cite a present-day melt value exceeding $5 billion, based on the gold price used in those materials.
The planned recovery expedition is scheduled to begin in 2027. The initial phase is expected to involve approximately two to three weeks of exploration and excavation, followed by continuing recovery operations as the target areas are reached. Full recovery and securement are anticipated to take place over a longer multi-year period.
The operation is being planned around specialized subsea technology, including remotely operated vehicles, diving systems, excavation equipment, and other recovery capabilities. The initial objective is to reach and open the areas believed to contain the historic cargo before beginning continuous recovery operations.
More than a century of research, historical records, documentation, and investigation has helped establish the foundation for a modern recovery effort. Today, advances in subsea technology and specialized marine recovery capabilities make it possible to approach the wreck with tools and expertise that were not available in 1909.
